Aderant Expert Billing: Cloud Migration Performance Benchmarking

We recommended establishing a performance baseline in the current on-premise environment to enable meaningful comparisons post-migration. Using our proven methodology, our UK-based team worked with the client to identify and document key high-concurrency scenarios.

These scenarios were scripted in LoadRunner, allowing for reusability across both environments. Supporting data and Matter mappings were carefully prepared with input from client SMEs to ensure test accuracy—particularly ensuring the right volume and attributes of Matters were available.

The performance scenarios in scope were as follows:

  • Pre-Bill Creation
  • Bulk Pre-Bill Creation
  • Bill Reviewer – Single and Multiple Timeline Edits
  • Matter Partner – Single and Multiple Timeline Edits
  • Biller Posting Bills

To validate the migration, Prolifics conducted multiple performance tests in both environments, comparing key metrics such as response times and system scalability. The tests were performed under varying user loads, with optimisations applied at different stages to fine-tune Azure's performance, working closely with the client’s technical infrastructure team, as well as Azure personnel.  Identified optimisations included database indexing, SQL tuning and app server scaling.

Results:

  • SQL tuning played a critical role in achieving significant performance improvements in Azure environments.
  • App server scaling improved the handling of increased user volumes.
  • Azure environment was proved to be a viable and scalable solution for migrating the Expert Billing App, once the key optimisations were applied.

Conclusion:

The testing provided key insights that identified a series of configuration and infrastructure improvements that needed to be made to the Azure environment prior to migration, to allow the migrated application to meet and exceed the performance of the on-premise installation.

Once these changes had been made, the Azure environment was able to achieve lower response times at higher levels of load, which would lead to better system stability and improved usage of resources. Our client was then able to confidently go live with the migrated version of the application, in the knowledge that the performance would be better than the on-premise installation.
